- Type 1 is installed directly on hardware, used on enterprise server and data center (imporves scalability, performance, and robustness)
- Type 2 is software that runs on VM instances, runs on host machine, on top of existing OS

What is the purpose of an SDN controller?

- SDN controller allows separation of data plane and network control plane using APIs
- flow travelling through network must get permission froom the controller first
- controller creates and manages OpenFlow tables that defince the behaviour of network
