Chapter 9: Homeostatis & Hormonal Control Flashcards
homeostasis
maintenance of a constant internal environment
negative feedback process
disturbance in body’s system sets in motion a sequence of events that tends to restore ur system
corrective mechanism
brings about reverse effect of the stimulus
hormone
chemical substance produced in minute quantities by an endocrine gland, transported in bloodstream to target organs where it exerts its effects
endocrine glands
ductless glands: does not have a duct to carry away its secretion
- hormone secreted directly into bloodstream, bloodstream distributes hormone ard body
diabetes mellitus
diabetes.
type 1: early in persons life- juvenile/early onset diabetes
- islets of Langerhans unable to produce r secrete sufficient insulin [inherited]
type 2: late onset diabetes [overweight ppl]
- target cells (muscle cells) do not respond well to insulin
blood vessels under skin
sweat glands
sensory receptors
thermoreceptors
