Chapter 9 - Genetic Diversity Flashcards
The founder effect
Occurs when a few new individuals from a population colonise a new region
The few individuals will carry only a few number of allele’s compared to the rest of the population
The population that develops from the small colonisation will not have a large genetic diversity
Selective breeding
Also known as artificial selection
Selecting individuals with desired characteristics and using them to parent the next generation
Selective breeding is often carried out to produce high yield breeds
Genetic bottleneck
When a population or species have a rapid drop in numbers
The group of survivors will possess a much smaller genetic diversity
As these individuals rebuild the population the rebuilt population’s genetic diversity is also very restricted
