Chapter 9 - Enzymes Flashcards
Solar energy
Energy from the sun
Cellular energy
The energy stored in the bonds of biomolecules
Catalyst
A substance that speeds up a reaction , without being used up in that reaction itself
Enzymes
Proteins that speed up a reaction without being used up in the reaction
Class: a biological catalyst - proteins produced in the body that are capable of speeding up a reaction
Substrate
The substance with which an enzyme reacts
Product
The substance(s) the enzyme forms
Denatured enzyme
An enzyme that was lost its shape and can no longer function
- too high temp (usually above 50C), unsuitable pH, inhibitors, radiation
Bioprocessing
The use of enzyme-controlled reactions to produce a product
Bioreactor
A vessel or container in which living cells or their products are used to make a product
Immobilised enzymes
Enzymes that are attached, or fixed, to each other, or to an inert material
