Chapter 9 Chemical Equilibrium Flashcards
What is salt?
A salt is produced in the reaction of an acid with a base. Examples include NaCl.
What is an electrolyte?
solute which forms ions when dissolved in water and thus produce solutions that conduct electricity.
What are strong and weak electrolytes?
Strong electrolytes ionize completely in a solvent, weak electrolytes ionize only partially.
What are acid and base?
An acid donates protons. A base accepts protons.
What is a zwitterion?
in an ion that has both a positive and a negative charge.
Which solvent behaves as an acid in the presence of basic solutes and base in the presence of acidic solutes?
Amphiprotic solvent
What is autoprotolysis (also called authorization)?
is the spontaneous reaction of molecules of a substance to give a pair of ions.
What is a hydronium ion?
Is the hydrated proton formed when water reacts with an acid. It is usually formulated as H3O+ although there are several possible higher hydrates.
