Chapter 9: Cellular respiration Flashcards
What is cellular respiration?
Cellular respiration- is the process that releases energy by breaking down food molecules in the presence of oxygen.
Describe the overall equation for cellular respiration.
Glucose + 02 → CO2 + H2O
Under what condition(s) does it occur?
When oxygen occurs
What are the three main stages of cellular respiration?
Glycolysis, Kreb Cycle, Electron Transport Chain
Where does each take place?
Glycolysis (cytoplasm), Kreb Cycle & Electron Transport Chain (Mitochondria).
Can cells obtain energy in the absence of oxygen? How?
Yes through fermentation
What type(s) of organisms use alcoholic fermentation?
Yeast and other small organisms
In what cell type, and under what condition(s), does lactic acid fermentation take place?’
Muscle cells, under the condition of being anaerobic
Which product(s) of the overall equation for cellular respiration is produced… …by the Krebs cycle?
CO2 and 24 ATP molecules
Which product(s) of the overall equation for cellular respiration is produced… …by the electron transport chain?
H2O and 6 ATP molecules
