Chapter 9 Articulations Flashcards
Define Articulations
Is a joint or where two bones come together
Articulation functions (types of joint)
Synarthrosis
Amphiarthrosis
Diarthrosis
Define synarthrosis
Immovable joint
Define Amphiarthrosis
Slightly moveable joint
Define Diarthrosis
Freely movable joint
Classification of Fibrous joint (a structure)
- Sutures- bones in the skull (fibrous connections)
- Gomphosis- Teeth bound to bony sockets by periodontal ligaments (fibrous connection)
- Syndesmosis- (fibrous connection) bones connected by ligaments; example: distal articulation of tibia and fibula by ligaments
Classification of cartilaginous joints (a structure)
- Synchondrosis- 2 bones bound together but cartilage; costal cartilage
- Symphysis- (cartilage) bones separated by pad of fibrocartilage; Ex: pubic synthesis
Classification of synovial joints (a structure)
6 different types
- Surrounded by a articular capsule which contains synovial fluid and covered by articular cartilage.
- synovial fluid functions:
1. Lubrication to prevent friction
2. Provide nutrients and waste disposal for “chondrocytes”
3. Shock absorption
Shoulder joints called
Glenohumeral Joint & acromioclavicular
Shoulders associated ligaments
- Acromioclavical ligament
- Coracoaromial ligament
- Coracoclavicular ligament
Acromioclavicular ligament
Connects acrimony to the clavicle
Coracoacromial ligament
Connected acromion to the coracoid process
Coracoclavicular ligament
Connects coracoid process to the clavicle
Define glanohumeral joint
Is a ball and socket (Diarthrosis)
- glenoid fossa in humerus
The acromailocalvicular joint is a gliding Diarthrosis
Knee joint
Is a hinge Diarthrosis
Where the femur and tibia articulate
Where the femur and patella articular is a gliding Diarthrosis
