Chapter 9 : alkaline metals done Flashcards
What group are alkaline metals
group 2
Trend in BP in group 2
Get lower
Bigger ions as you go down
nucleus further away from the the delocalised electrons so less attraction
Trend in solubility of Hydroxides formed?
Gets more soluble as you go down the group
Trend in solubility of Sulphates formed?
Solubility increases as you go down the group
How would you test for sulfate ions in solution
Add hcl
Use aqueous BaCl2 and add it to the solution
BaCl will be displaced and BaSO4 will be formed
really insoluble so white precipiate formed.
BaCl2 + Na2SO4 → BaSO4 + 2NaCl
Ba2+(aq) + SO42-(AQ)—–BaSO4(S)
Trend in reactivity with water down the group?
It increases
electrons further away from nucleus
less attraction
Whats MgOH2 used for in medicine?
Its used as an antacid
How is titanium extracted
titanium oxide is reated with chlorine
titanium choride is reacted with mg
(TiCl4(l) + 2Mg(s)——-2MgCl2(s) + Ti(s)
Trend in 1st ionisation energy down the group 2?
Decreases as they get further away from the nucleus so less attraction and more shielding
How is barium sulfate used in medicine?
As barium meals for x rays.
Not harmful as insoluble
what is the reaction between an alkali metal and water?
M(s) + h2o(l)====== m(oh)2(aq) + H2(g)
but is steam is used. MO(s) is made.
