Chapter 9 Flashcards
What are thommens postulates of allergenicity
Pollen must be capable of eliciting an allergic response, anemophilous (wind pollinated), buoyant, abundant, widely distributed
Principle methods of volumetric air sampling
Impaction, impingement, filtration
Durham sampler
Micro slides coated with adhesive and exposed for a 24 hr period. Cons: biased for larger particles, cannot determine concentration, exposed to weather
Settle plates
Particles allowed to settle on afar medium for period of time and then incubated and counted (bacteria, molds). Cons: biased towards larger particles, cannot determine concentration, indoor use only
Slit impactor types
Burglars spore trap and allergenic o air sampler
Burkard spore trap
Known amounts of air drawn in through sampling orifice. Efficient for particles lass than 10um. Affected by wind speed.
Allergenco
Non wind oriented, grab type suction. Primarily indoor.
Rotorod
Ross sweep through air and collect particles on surfaces coated with adhesive, volumetric count. Not affected by wind, not efficient for smaller particles <10um
Anderson sieve
Series of sieves with perforations- particles pass through and separated into size specific fractions. Airborn fungo. Expensive.
Gross pollinates when?
Late spring to summer months. Year round in souther climates.
