What is a common carrier?
An entity that provides wired and wireless communication services to the general public for a fee.
What is a CSU/DSU?
A Channel Service Unit/Data Service Unit is a hardware device about the size of an external modem that converts a digital data frame from the communications technology used on a local area network (LAN) into a frame appropriate to a wide-area network (WAN) and vice versa.
What is a PVC?
A Permanent Virtual Circuit is a connection that is permanently established between two or more nodes in frame relay and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) based networks. It enables the creation of a logical connection on top of a physical connection between nodes that communicate frequently or continuously.
What is a packet-switched network?
The type of network in which relatively small units of data called packets are routed through a network based on the destination address contained within each packet. Breaking communication down into packets allows the same data path to be shared among many users in the network.
What is frame relay?
A standardized wide area network technology that specifies the physical and data link layers of digital telecommunications channels using a packet switching methodology.
What is a tunnel?
A protocol that allows for the secure movement of data from one network to another. This involves allowing private network communications to be sent across a public network, such as the Internet, through a process called encapsulation.
Regulation of voice and data in United States?
The agency that regulates communication is the Federal Communication Commission which is a federal government agency.
What is a ring architecture?
Network that connects all computers in a closed loop with each computer linked to the next circuit with full or half-duplex transmission.
What is a star architecture?
A network that connects computers to one central computer. It is easy to manage because central computer receives and routes all messages in the network.
What is a mesh architecture?
With a full-mesh a network has every computer connected to every other computer. Full-mesh is seldom used because of its extremely high cost. With a partial-mesh not all computers are connected to one another.
What are T-carrier services?
Most common service used in the United States. T1 provides data rate of 2 Mbps, T3 provides data rate of 45 Mbps, and FT1 provides data rate of 128, 256, 384, 512, or 768 Kbps.
How can WAN performance be improved?
Improving circuit capacity= analyze message traffic in network to find which circuits are approaching capacity and upgrade them. Decreasing demand= require a network impact statement for all new applications developed or purchased and move data closer to users.
