Chapter 8 Flashcards

1
Q

What is a rack?

A

A metal frame chassis that holds, stacks, organizes, secures and protects various computer network and server hardware devices. The term “network” refers to the rack being used to house network hardware like routers, switches, access points, and modems.

Q

What is a VLAN trunk?

A

A Cisco proprietary protocol that propagates the definition of Virtual Local Area Networks (VLAN) on the whole local area network. To do this, VTP carries VLAN information to all the switches in a VTP domain. VTP advertisements can be sent over 802.1Q, and ISL trunks.

Q

What is a layer 2 switch?

A

A type of network switch or device that works on the data link layer (OSI Layer 2) and utilizes MAC Address to determine the path through where the frames are to be forwarded. A layer 2 switch can also be referred to as a multiport bridge.

Q

What is a chassis switched backbone?

A

Enables users to plug certain types of network devices called modules into switch which has a certain internal capacity.

Q

Advantages and disadvantages of a routed backbone?

A

Primary advantage is that there is clear segmentation of each part of network that is connected. Primary disadvantages are time delays and more costly.

Q

How does a VLAN (Virtual LAN) work?

A

Networks segment software rather than hardware. This allows for better and faster flow of traffic. Computers act as if they are connected to the same switch or hub.

Q

What are the functions of a VLAN?

A

Switch receives frame that is destined for another computer and switch forwards frame unchanged to correct computer.

Q

What is a VLAN ID?

A

ranges from 1 to 1005 or 4094 depending on range and used to match traditional IP subnet.

Q

What is a VLAN tag?

A

Used by switches to move frames when they are received. Forwards the frame to the correct computer by inserting id number and priority code in the frame.

Q

What is the architecture of a VLAN?

A

Improves performance by reducing traffic and can limit where broadcast traffic flows by dividing network into subnets.

Q

How can backbone performance be improved?

A

Improving device performance= improving routing with faster devices, using distance vector routing, using sufficient memory. Improving circuit capacity= increase circuit capacity or add additional circuit alongside heavily used ones. Reducing demand= restrict applications that use a lot of capacity decrease number of broadcast messages sent.
