Define: Reinforcement

A

In a composite material, it is the secondary phase which usually serves to strengthen the composite (sometimes called a reinforcing agent)

Q

Define: Continuous vs. Discontinuous Fibers

A

Continuous: Fibers used in composites that are very long and offer a continuous path by which a load an be carried by the composite part. Hard to achieve to variations in fibrous material and processing.

Discontinuous: Chopped sections of continuous fibers are short lengths (L/D = 100). Whiskers are an important type of discontinuous fiber.

Q

Define: Cemented Carbide

A

Composites composed of one or more carbide compounds bonded in a metallic matrix. Common forms are tungsten carbide, titanium carbide, and chromium carbide.

Q

Define: Fillers

A

Polymer Matrix Composites (PMCs) contain particles, flakes, and short fibers. When these are used in polymer modeling compounds, called fillers. Divided into two categories, reinforcements and extenders.
