Enfranchisement
*A legal process for terminating a person’s Indian status and conferring full Canadian citizenship.
* Attempted to assimilate the first nations
* One person agreed, but was denied
Indian Act
*Governs matters related to Indian status, First Nations governments, and reserve lands
* Enacted on April 12th,1876
* Doesn’t include Metis/Inuit peoples
* Has been amended in 1951 and 1985
The White Paper
*Proposed to abolish treaties and several other legal documents that differentiated the First Nations from being Canadian

* Assimilative due to failure of considering Indigenous perspectives
* Developed in 1969
The Red Paper
*Successful rejection of the White Paper’s Proposals developed by the First Nations governance system

Aboriginal Collective Thought
*Refers to the shared worldview and values amonsgt the Indigenous peoples
* Emphasizes that everything and everyone is connected, including people, objects, and the environment.
Contemporary Land Claims
*Negotiated agreements between INdigenous peoples and the Canadian government to address unresolved issues of Aboriginal rights.
* Claims occurred in areas where historic treaties weren’t signed or where Aboriginal rights have not been legally addressed
Royal Commission on Aboriginals
- A significant Canadian intiative established in 1991 to imrove relations between the Aboriginal peoples and Canadians
