Ethnicity
Having distinctive cultural characteristics
Genocide
The systematic annihilation or attempted annihilation of a group of people because of their assumed race or ethnic group
Minority group
People who are singled out for unequal treatment and and who regard themselves as objects of collective discrimination
Dominant group
The group with the most power, greatest privileges, and highest social status
Ethnic work
Activities designed to discover, enhance, or maintain ethnic and racial identity
Melting pot
The view that Americans of various backgrounds would blend into sort of an ethnic stew
Discrimination
An act of unfair treatment directed against an individual or group
Prejudice
An attitude, usually expressed in a negative way
Individual discrimination
The negative treatment of one person by another on the basis of that persons perceived characteristics
Institutional discrimination
The negative treatment of a minority group that is built into the fabric of society
Authoritarian personality
Adorno’s term for people who are highly prejudiced, have deep respect for authority, and are submissive to authority figures
Reserve labor force
Unemployed workers being held in that status pending periods of economic boom who will be laid off when the boom is over
Selective perception
The act of seeing certain features of an object or situation, but remaining blind to others
Internal colonialism
A policy of economically exploiting minority groups
Segregation
The policy of keeping racial-ethnic groups apart
