chapter 9 Flashcards
1
Q
what are the types of Layout?
A
- process orientated layout
- product layout (assembly line)
- fixed position layout
- retail layout
- warehouse layout
- office layout
- cellular layout
2
Q
Process-Oriented Layout?
A
- similar process located in close proximity
- used with process-focused processes
- the principle is to place departments with large flows of material or people together
3
Q
what are the steps to developing a Process-Oriented Layout?
A
- construct a “from to matrix” and “total flow matrix”
- determine space requirements for each department
- develop an initial schematic diagram
4, determine the cost of this layout - by trail and error(or more sophisticated means), try to improve the initial layout
- prepare a detailed plan that evaluates factors in addition to transpiration cost
4
Q
what are some rules of thumb for Retail Layouts?
A
- locate high draw items around the periphery of the store
- use prominent locations such as the first or last aisle for high impulse and high margin items
- remover crossover aisles that allow customers the opportunity to move between aisles
- distribute what are known in the trade as “per items” (items that may dominate a shopping trip) to both sides of an aisle, and disperse them to increase the viewing of other items
- use end aisle locations because they have a very high exposure
5
Q
what does a Good Service Layout consider?
A
- ambient conditions: background characteristics such as lighting, sound, smell, and temperature
- spatial layout and functionality: which involve customer circulation path planning
- signs, symbols, and artifacts: characteristics of building design that carry social significance
- maximize sales per square metre
6
Q
whats the Office Layout?
A
- design positions people, equipment, and offices for maximum information flow
- arranged by process or product
- relationship chart used
- examples: insurance company, software company
7
Q
Warehouse Layout
A
- design balances space(cube) utilization and material handling costs
- two basic options of storage: store in Fixed Areas vs store in Random Areas
- items moved between dock and various storage areas
- relationships between receiving area and shipping areas. sometimes they are next to each other, and sometimes in opposite places
8
Q
Product-Orientated Layout
A
- facility organized around product
- design minimizes line imbalance
- types: fabrication line; assemble line
9
Q
Cellular Layout-work cells
A
- special case of product orientated layout-in what is ordinary a [process orientated facility
- consists of different machines brought together to make a product
- temporary arrangement only
