Chapter 9 Flashcards
Define dominant.
A variation of a gene that will produce a certain phenotype, even in the presence of other alleles.
Define recessive.
A type of allele which will not be manifested in an individual unless both of the individual’s copies of that gene have that particular genotype.
Define a true-bred organism.
An organism that only produces offspring with the same traits.
Define a testcross.
A testcross is the mating between an individual of unknown gentoype and a homozygous recessive individual.
Define incomplete dominance.
When the F1 hybrids fall between the phenotypes of the two parental varieties because neither allele is dominant over the other
What is the law of segregation?
A sperm or egg carries only one allele for each inherited character because allele pairs seperate from each other during the production of gametes.
Define a locus.
The specific location of a gene along a chromosome.
Define a dihybrid cross.
A mating of parental varieties that differ in character
What is the law of independent assortment?
The inheritance of one character has no effect on the inheritance of another. This would mean that a dihybrid cross is the equivalent of two monohybrid crosses.
What are the the parts of a stamen?
Anther, filament
What are the parts of a carpel?
Stigma, style, ovary
