How long has weaving been around?
9,000 years
What are warp yarns?
also known as ends, yarns that run vertically in garments and draperies
What are weft yarns?
Also known as fill yarns, yarns that run the width of the fabric and traditionally run horizontally across garments
The number of yarns in 1 square inch of fabric
thread count
Balanced fabric
has the same number of yarns in the warp and the weft
example of very light fabric
less than 1 oz per sq yard, mosquito netting, sheer curtains
example of light fabric
2 to 4 oz per sq yard, blouses, shirts
example of medium bottom fabric
4 to 8 oz per sq yard, slacks, skirts
example of heavy fabric
9 to 15 oz per sq yard, work clothing
example of very heavy fabric
15 oz per sq yard, heavyweight upholstery fabric
describes the relationship between the warp and the weft yarns
grain
What is a loom?
The matching that the yarns are weaved on can be hand or electronically done
What are selvages?
run parallel to the warp yarns and form the lengthwise edges of the woven fabric. Different types formed by different looms
What is a plain weave?
the simplest form of weaving. done by passing a weft yarn over and under one warp yarn at a time across the width of the fabric.
What is a basket weave?
loosely woven with two or more weft yarns interlaces with two or more warp yarns.
What is seersucker fabric?
puckered fabric that is created by slack tension weaving
What is twill weave?
Weave pattern identified by diagonal lines of the surface of the fabric.
What is satin weave?
Weave pattern that allows the warp warns to float over four or more weft yarns and then under one weft yarn again.
What is dobby weave?
Weave characterized by small, repeated, geometric patterns created on a dobby loom
