Igneous
Having to do with earths molten or once molten material
Volcano
A mountain built from solid molten rock coming from deep inside the earth
Vent
An opening in the earths crust from which lava and gas can escape
Lava
Liquid magma that has escaped from inside the earth.
Crater
A round depression at the top of a volcano that contains a main vent or a caldera
Pyroclastic material
Sharp, fragmented, solid lava; includes asg, cinders, tephra and bombs
Tephra
Deposit of loose pyroclastic material and ash covering the ground
Shield volcano
Wide, flattened, dome shapes volcano built up by many quiet eruptions of runny lava
Cinder cone
A small, steep sided volcano made of pyroclastic material from explosive eruptions of cinder and ash
Stratovolcano (composite volcano)
Medium sized volcano made of alternating layers of lava from quiet eruptions and pyroclastic material from explosive eruptions
Active volcano
A volcano that is currently erupting or has erupted in historical times
Dormant volcano
A complete volcano that has not erupted in history but has seismic activity beneath it.
Extinct volcano
A volcano that has never erupted in history, has no seismic activity and is often very eroded
