Chap 18 Flashcards
Jet stream
Belt of high speed winds that blows across the upper latitudes of the earth
Atmosphere
Envelope of gases that surrounds a planet, such as earth.
Ozone layer
Concentrated oxygen (O3) that protects earth from harmful light
Ionosphere
Upper part of the atmosphere that reflects long wave radio signals back to earths surface.
Magnetosphere
Comes from inside the earth and extends 100,000 miles in space, protecting living things from the suns radiation.
Radiation
-Heat transfer caused by waves, such as light.
Conduction
Heat transfer caused by direct contact of two objects.
Convection
Heat transfer caused by the movement of warmer, less dense air and cooler, more dense air.
Greenhouse effect
Warming of the lower atmosphere as it traps heat from the ground.
What are the 5 levels of earths atmosphere in order
Troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere.
