Directly involved in providing patient care, Responsible for care provided by team, Supervises staff, & Evaluates care
Professional Staff Nurses
RNs who have direct responsibility for patient care, Collaborate with nurse manager and clinical specialists to solve nursing problems, Patient advocate.
Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses
Provide direct nursing service under direct supervision of licensed physician, professional nurse, or dentist in most states
Nursing Assistants
Help RNs and LP/VNs by providing basic nursing care
Unlicensed Assistive Personnel
-Are NOT certified
-Taught to perform specific tasks, receive little training
Health Unit Coordinators
Provide secretarial services for a nursing unit
Student Nurses
Learn clinical skills under instruction of clinical instructor
Multiskilled Workers
-Medical assistant or patient care tech (PCT)
-Must be prepared to provide safe and competent care
-Most nursing organizations oppose use of multiskilled workers in health care facilitie
Case Method
A nurse is responsible for the entire care of one or more patients for one shift
- Example: home care nursing, private duty nursing
Functional Nursing
Each team member is assigned a specific function or task
- Example: one person does all vitals, one person does all beds, one person passing all meds, one nurse does all dressing changes, etc
