Chapter 8 — The Arrest, Trial, Crucifixion, and Resurrection Flashcards
The Garden of Gethsemane events are significant because they show
God’s love for people that caused Him to pay the penalty for their sins.
Concerning Christ’s arrest, all of the Synoptic writers record that
Judas kissed Christ.
From the Synoptic Gospels’ record of Jesus’ arrest, we see that
Only Matthew says Christ could have called twelve legions of angels to help Him.
Since blasphemy was not a capital crime under Roman law, the religious leaders accused Christ of
Claiming to be a king in opposition to Caesar.
Which statement is true concerning Jesus’ crucifixion?
Christ was arrested at midnight, was crucified at 9:00 AM, and died at 3 PM, a total of about fifteen hours.
The two people who asked Pilate for Christ’s body were
Members of the Jewish Council.
What helps us understand how Christ fulfilled His promise to rise from the dead on the third day?
He was in the tomb part of Friday, all of Saturday, and part of Sunday; the custom in those days was to count parts of days as whole days.
According to Luke’s Gospel and our study textbook, which of these men saw Jesus first after His resurrection?
The two disciples on the road to Emmaus.
Where the Synoptic accounts differ, we may conclude that
Each writer was selective in what he wrote, so variations indicate differences in perspective rather than essential facts.
Of Christ’s post resurrection appearances recorded in the Synoptic Gospels, Luke gives
The most extensive treatment and indicates that the Eleven first saw Christ in Jerusalem.
Gethsemane was near what well-known landmark?
The Mount of Olives
Discuss the significance of the events that occurred in Gethsemane.
You should note that Christ revealed the extent of God’s love for people that caused Him to send His Son to pay the awful penalty for their sins. The garden events also revealed the apathy of those who were closest to Christ and indicated their need for prayer.

List the phases of the trial in probable order and indicate whether they represented Roman or Jewish phases.
- Jewish: Christ taken to Annas
- Jewish: Christ taken to Caiaphas.
- Jewish: Christ taken to the Sanhedrin.
- Roman: Christ examined by Pilate.
- Roman: Christ taken to Herod.
- Roman: Christ returned to Pilate.
- Roman: Christ condemned by Pilate.
What was the accusers’ reaction when Pilate rejected the charges based on Jewish religious law?
After Pilate refused to entertain a charge based on Jewish religious matters, Christ’s captors charge Him with treason.
Describe the crucifixion of Christ, including the time involved in this ordeal.
Christ was apparently too weak to bear His own cross to Golgotha. He was crucified at 9 AM and six hours later He died. Between 9 AM and noon, the soldiers cast lots for His garments, and from noon until 3 PM darkness covered the land.
State the three phenomena that occurred when Christ died.
The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, and rocks split. The tombs were opened and the bodies of many righteous people who had dies were raised to life.
What two Jewish leaders publicly revealed sympathy toward Jesus following the Crucifixion? What does this indicate about the Sanhedrin’s condemnation of Jesus?
Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. While the Sanhedrin as a body opposed Christ, some of its members were sympathetic to Him.
Tell briefly how Christ fulfilled His promise to rise from the dead on the third day.
Christ died on Friday and was buried that evening: so He was in the tomb part of Friday, all day Saturday, and part of Sunday before He rose from the dead. It was customary in those days to count parts of days as whole days.
Briefly contrast Luke’s and Matthew’s resurrection accounts.
Of the Synoptic writers, only Luke gives a detailed treatment of Christ’s post resurrection appearances. Matthew alone of the Synoptic writers mentions the incident of the guards at the tomb and their flight to the chief priests. While Matthew says that Jesus first appeared to the Eleven in Galilee, Luke states that He appeared to them in Jerusalem.
