Chapter 8; sterile products and pharmacy equipment Flashcards
area of turbulence
a triangular-shaped area in front of the beaker in which is a mixture of HEPA air and unfiltered room air
biological safety cabinet (BSC):
a type of hood that blows HEPA-filtered air vertically downward through a top hood and into grills located along the front and back edges of the work surface area and that has a clear glass or plastic shield
catheter
a delivery or drainage tube that is inserted into a vein, artery, or body cavity
clean room
an area in which the air quality, temperature, and humidity are highly regulated to reduce the risk of cross-contamination
contaminant
any unwanted particulate matter or sickness-inducing agent
critical area
a place where CSPs, containers, and closures are exposed to the environment
critical site
location where contaminants might come into contact with a CSP
compound sterile product (CSP):
a mixture of one or more substances that is made sterile, or free of contamination, before use
HEPA
filtered high-efficiency particulate air
infusion pump
an automatic device used with an IV system for delivering medication at regular intervals in specific quantities
intravenous (IV) injection:
an injection directly into a vein
intravenous push (IVP):
a small volume of medicine injected into a vein and administered over a short period of time
intravenous piggybacks (IVPB):
administered on a set schedule, smaller IV backs that are added on, or “piggy-backed” to a large-volume IV bag
laminar airflow hood (LAH)
a work area that pre filters large contaminants from the workspace and then uses HEPA-filtered air in a horizontal flow to extract smaller particles
large-volume IV bags
often used for fluid replacement or for maintenance of fluids, administered continually
