agentic traits
traits that have traditionally been associated with males and that indicate task orientation, assertiveness, and a striving for achievement
ambivalent sexism
sexism in which the individual has both positive, yet traditional, attitudes towrad women, and negative, hostile attitudes toward women
availability heuristic
states that our judgements about hte probability of the event will be affected by the availability of that event information
benevolent sexism
sexism marked by a positive attitudes toward, and positive stereotypical beliefs about, women
bipolar assumption
states that an individual has characteristics associated with either males or females, but not both
communal traits
traits tha thave traditionally been associated with women, such as the desire to foster relationships, to be sensitive and to get along with others
descriptive stereotypes
tells how most people in a group behave, think and feel. it describes the group’s motives, expectations, and other aspects of behavior
dulaistic view
states that people can have some of both agentic and communcal traits
face-ism
the greater facial prominence of depictions of men in the media, versus the greater emphasis on the whole body of women
glass ceiling
artificial barriers based on attitudinal or organizational bias that prevent qualified individuals from advancing in their organization into upper management positions
hostile sexism
negative attitudes toward, and negative beliefs about, women
informational influence
a type of social influence that is exerted on the individual when they wish to be correct in their judgments, opinion, or perceptions. the individual will be better persuaded by information that is perceived to be accurate
modern sexism
sexism indicated by the denial of discrimination against women, a hostility toward equality for women, and nonsupport of programs and legislation designed to help women
neosexism
sexism marked by a manifestation of a conflict between egalitarian values and residual negative feelings toward women
normative influence
a type of social influence that is exerted n the individual when they wish to get along iwth others. the individual will be more likely to conform to others’ opinions in order to establish and maintain a friendly relationship with other persons
old fashioned sexism
sexism characterized by endorsement of traditional gender roles, differential treatment of women and men, and stereotypes about lesser female competence
prescriptive stereotype
suggests how stereotyped groups should think, feel and act
sexism
negative attitudes, prejudice, or discrimination directed toward someone on the basis of their gender
social roles theory
states that the reason for gender differences in social behavior is not biological differences between bmen and women but the different socialization processes for men and women that lead them to perform different roles in society
