types of damages
- compensatory (general, special, aggravated)
- exemplary

- contemptuous
compensatory damages purpose
to restore parties to their previous state from before the offence. Special (quantifiable, loss of income, medical expenses), general (pain and suffering, loss of amenity), aggravated (humiliation, distress)
exemplary damages purpose
aim to punish, deter and denounce the defendant for their actions
nominal damages purpose
to uphold the plaintiff’s rights with a minimal money amount.
contemptuous damages purpose
legal right to damages, but no moral right. Shows contempt for a claim whilst legally abiding
injunctions and their specific purposes
restrictive injunctions prevent someone from doing something, mandatory injunctions force someone to do something.
