Race
A social category based o real or perceived biological differences between people.
Ethnicity
A social category that’s applied to a group with shared ancestry or heritage.
Ex. Amish, Jews
Symbolic Ethnicity
An ethnic identity seen only in specific events.
Ex. St. Patricks day for the Irish
Situational Ethnicity
An ethnic identity shown deliberately in some situation when the identity is favored or provides a benefit.
Minority
A social group denied the same power and resources available to society’s dominant group. Group doesn’t have to be fewer in numbers.
Functionalist
Analyze how ethnic groups arrived in 1900s became assimilated into larger society.
Conflict Theorists
The struggle for power and control
Passing
A person presenting themselves as a different racial or ethnic group than the one they were born into. Done when it’s beneficial then the race they were born into.
Double Consciousness
By W.E.B DuBois divided identity experienced by blacks in the U.S–>present themselves as white
Embodied Identity
Elements of identity that are made through the other person’s perceptions of physical traits. Is the basis of discrimination.
Identity Challenges
Accusations that an individual is not really black. They go out of the boundaries people think are what define you as black.
Intersectionality
White woman lose some of their “whiteness” when they marry a black man.
Pluralism
Permits racial and ethnic variation and encourages people to embrace it.
