Chapter 8 - Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the role of ATP in cellular activities?
ATP stores energy, used by all cells as their energy source.
Where do plants get the energy they need to produce food?
Light from the sun.
What is energy?
Energy is what powers all cellular functions.
What are organisms that make their own food?
Autotrophs.
What are animals called that get their energy from others?
Heterotrophs.
What does ATP consist of?
Adenine, ribose, and 3 phosphate groups.
What is the difference from ADP and ATP?
ADP has one less phosphate group than ATP.
What did the experiments of the three scientists reveal?
They showed that in the presence of light plants transform carbon dioxide into oxygen.
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2+6H2O>C6H12O6+6O2
What are the reactants of photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water
Sugar and oxygen
What are the four things needed for photosynthesis?
Water, sunlight, carbon dioxide, chlorophyll.
What are pigments?
Molecules that absorb the sun’s light.
What’s a plants principle pigment?
Chlorophyll
What is the relationships between chlorophyll and color of the plants?
Plants reflect the colors we see rather than they absorb.
What are light dependent reactions?
Reactions that require light.
