Chapter 10 Flashcards
How does cell division solve the growth problem?
It replicates the DNA and it gets smaller lowering the cell volume.
What problems does growth cause for cells?
More demands it places on DNA and the more trouble it has moving enough nutrients and wastes across the membrane.
Which increases more rapidly, SA or Volume?
Volume
What are the main events of the cell cycle?
G1, S, G2, and mitosis.
What are the four phases of mitosis?
Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase.
What is mitosis & cytokinesis?
Mitosis is the process of dividing the cell and cytokinesis is when the cytoplasm divides.
What is the cell cycle?
The process of cell growth, DNA replication, and dividing.
What is interphase?
The period of growth in the cell.
What are chromosomes made of?
Chromatin
How is cytokinesis different in other plants than in cells?
In plants a cell plate begins to form then it turns into a cell wall.
How is the cell cycle regulated?
The cell cycle is controlled by a protein called cyclin.
How do cyclins work?
Cyclins work when the body sends them to a cell to stop or start the cycle.
How cancers different from others?
They don’t respond to cyclins.
What can stop cells from growing?
Being in contact with other cells.
What happens when cells do not respond to cyclins?
Cancer.
