Chapter 8: Pests and Pesticides Flashcards
Define pests and give examples of associated problems.
Pests: a human concept- anything that adversely affects human interests.
Evaluate the usage of pesticides.
Pesticides are used to kill bugs because they are eating our crops or invading our homes. They can also be used on weeds because they take the nutrients out of the soil and look ugly.
What are bedbugs? Where are they most likely to be found?
?
Discuss the vectors of disease including the diseases they transfer.
?
What are the synthetic insecticides?
chlorinated hydrocarbons, organophosphates, carbamates, etc. anything manmade
What are the different types of herbicides used?
Pre-planting
Pre/Post emergents
Weed control
What are some of the environmental impacts of using insecticides/herbicides?
Using Insecticides/herbicides means that the things they’re trying to kill could build up a resistance to the pesticide.
What are the hazards to human health from insecticides/ herbicides?
They can cause either Acute or Chronic symptoms. Acute: Organophosphates: abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive sweating, convulsions, coma, death. Chronic: Cancer, reproductive problems. They can also affect our endocrine systems by feminization of males, birth defects, and impaired fertility. They are also immune system disruptors: infectious disease incidence increases, contact dermatitis seen.
What is the difference between insecticide usage and IPM?
An IPM is integrated pest management. It combines various methods to prevent pests. It can use natural enemies, microbial pesticides, sec attractants, insect growth regulators, and host plant resistance. IPMs are more natural ways to get rid of pests.
