Chapter 15: Water Resources Flashcards
The hydrologic cycle
Evaporation Transportation of water by plants Transportation of atmospheric water Precipitation Runoff
How much water is needed for survival versus to live?
Survival: 1-3 L
Live: 50 L
What are the reasons why we need water?
We need water to drink, cook, clean, bathe
What are the three main sources of water consumption – who uses the most?
Irrigation agriculture
Industries
Household
Discuss the options for water conservation.
We can use recycled water to water our yards and flush our waste.
What are potential sources of groundwater pollution?
waste storage, treatment, or disposal facilities septic systems pipes, material transport operations nonpoint sources
Compare/contrast a point and nonpoint source water pollution.
point: enter waterways from well defined locations
nonpoint: runoff
Define euriophication
a term meaning “well fed” is a process initiated when dissolved nutrients enter a body of water where they act as a fertilizer to stimulate the growth and production of algae
Give examples of how water pollution can affect human health.
When people don’t have safe water they can lack basic hygiene. Also they can ingest toxic chemicals that can make them sick.
What is the safe water drinking act? Why is it important?
The safe water drinking act is the federal program to protect drinking water quality. It is important because we know that no matter where we are in the united states we can get safe clean water.
