N G tubes
Nasogastric tubes inserted through the nose and terminates in the stomach.
Short term solution - upto 4 weeks
Kept for longer period - if there is history of pneumonia
Type - ND tubes
Nasoduodenal tubes - short terym
used when esophageal reflex is suspected
Gastro paresis
inability to empty the stomach due to bilateral vagotomy or neural damage to the vagus nerve
Type - NJ tubes
Nasojejunal tubes
Gastrostomy tubes
tubes surgically placed directly into the stomach
administered - continuous feeding or bolus feeding
More advantageous than NG tubes - refer Pg 191
PEG tube
percutaneous endoscopic tube - directly to the the stomach
low risk - high success rate
PRG tube
percutaneous radiologic gastrostomy - exposure to radiation, for pts who can’t do PEG and surgical gastrostomy
Buried bumper syndrome
Skin irritation around exit site due
to leakage of gastric content, granuloma causing
bleeding, and discharge
