Chapter 8 Muscle System Flashcards
What does striated mean ?
Comes from a microscopic appearance of the muscle cell, they look striped. Alternating, crosswise dark and light bands run the length of each cell.
what gives muscle the stripped look?
The way the proteins Actin and Myosin line up gives this appearance.
What is the difference between a Tendon and a aponeurosis?
A tendon is a continuation of the connective tissue that goes into the muscle and its distributed which allows it to contract.
Aponeurosis is the connective tissue that some muscles connect to instead of tendons. Ex: linea Alba.
What is the origin of the muscle
the origin of the muscles is the part of the muscles that is most stable so it doesn’t move a lot.
What is the insertion of the muscle
The insertion is the part that undergoes most of the movement when a muscle contracts.
A muscle that shortens is:
A muscle that contracts
what is exitability?
When a muscle can respond to a stimulation such as a nerve impulse.
what is Contractibility?
when a muscle shortens in length when stimulated
What is Extensibility ?
a muscle will stretch when pulled
What is Elasticity
When a muscle returns to their original shape and length after contraction or extension.
term used to describe a muscle or muscle group that directly produces a desired movement?
Agonist
A muscle or muscle group that directly opposes the action of an agonist?
Antagonist
Skeletal muscle that contracts at the same time as an agonist and assist it in carrying out its action?
Synergist
A type of muscle that stabilizes joints to allow other movement to take place? Ex: some muscles that flex the digits also can flex the carpus or wrist
Fixator
what shape is Deltoid?
Triangle
Which is the muscle that allows for twitching of the skin?
Which is the muscle that allows for twitching of the skin?
The Cutaneous Muscle
Muscle responsible for chewing, located in the cheek area of the skull and its the most powerful of the chewing muscles. Its main action is to close the jaw
Masseter muscle
which 2 muscles extend the head and neck, and are located on the dorsal part of the neck?
Splenius and Trapezius
Which muscle can extends the head and neck and also pulls the front leg forward? It is a fairly large muscle that runs from proximal area of humerus up to the base of the skull?
Brachiocephalicus
Neck flexor muscle its smaller it extends from the sternum to the base of the skull and acts to flex the head and neck?
Sternocephalicus muscle
