Chapter 8 - Memory Flashcards
Parallel vs. Serial processing?
Parallel: searching for one feature at a time; fast and automatic
Serial: searching for 2 (or more) features at a time; slow and effortful.
What are the 3 phases of the Information Processing Model of memory?
- Encoding phase
- Storage phase
- Retrieval phase
What is the multi-store model of memory?
Sensory memory -> short term memory long-term memory
What is short term memory?
Active memory; only remains for a few seconds unless do maintenance rehearsal.
What kind of rehearsal is required to store in long-term memory?
Elaborative rehearsal.
What is chunking?
Organizing information into meaningful units to make it easier to remember (short term).
What is the working memory model?
Working memory refers to the structures and processes used to temporarily store and manipulate info.
What are the 4 components of the working memory system?
- Phonological loop: auditory info
- Visuospatial sketchpad: visual info
- Episodic buffer: integrates info - links to LTM
- Central executive: control centre - directs attention to relevant information.
What is explicit memory?
LTM system; processes involved when people remember specific info - what we’re consciously aware of.
What is implicit memory?
LTM system; system underlying unconscious memories - memories we acquire without awareness or intention.
What is episodic memory?
Memory of your personal past experiences that includes info about the time and place the experiences occurred.
What is semantic memory?
Memory for knowledge about the world - things you know subconsciously.
What is procedural memory?
Skills, habits, and other behaviours we know how to do without thinking about it; motor memory.
