Bilateral descent
Decent that is traced equally through both mother and father

System in which two separate lines of descent are recognized at the same time
Ambilineal
Individuals can’t select to trace descent

When lineage gets too large

A group that cross cuts a society and whose membership is based on common interest rather than kinship and residents
