RIS: system used to collect, store, and provide info on radiological tests

PIS: assists providers with ordering, allocating, and administering medication with a focus on patient safety issues, especially medication errors
patient monitoring system
system that automatically collects and stores patient data from various IS. Examples: fetal monitoring, vital signs, O2 saturation, etc.
optical character recognition
OCR; defined as a method of encoding text from analog paper into bitmapped images and translating the images into a form that is computer readable.
Nursing information system
NIS; assists in planning and monitoring of overall patient care and documents nursing care provided
laboratory information system
LIS; collects, stores, and manages lab tests and results.
interdisciplinary charting system
system used to collect and store patient assessments, progress notes, and care plans
emergency department system
EDS; designed to meet the unique needs of EDs; able to track patients from triage to discharge. Can record test results and other clinical info.
Document management system
DMS; electronic method of capturing and managing documents.
Clinical information system(s)
CISs; collects and stores medical, nursing, clinical ancillary areas (such as radiology and laboratory), and therapy department info related to patient care
clinical documentation
any manual or electronic notation or recording made by a physician or other healthcare clinician related to a patient’s medical condition or treatment
barcode
makes indexing more efficient because the barcode enters metadata automatically
backscanning
process of scanning past health records into DMS so there is an existing database of patient information
annotation
ability to add to the image in some way; the image may be a legal document and cannot be altered directly.
anesthesia information system
collects info on preoperative, operative, and postoperative anesthesia-related clinical info. Follows patient through the surgical process
