Formal Housing
Formal housing is housing provided by the government or private developers with legal rights to occupy the land. They are built with high quality building materials and residents have access to basic services, such as underground water pipes, electrical substations, power lines and sewage pipes to provide easy acces acces to water, electricity and provision of sanitisation services.
What is informal housing?
Informal housing is housing that is self-built, no legal right to occupy the land and lack of access to basic services. Many people who move to cities to seek opportunities and a better life are unable to afford housing, thus settling on the outskirts of cities as squatters. These informal housing results in social unrest, the degradation of environmental quality and facilitates the spread of diseases.
Where is formal housing found in a city?
Formal housing is found on desirable land within the city, being situated near greenery and amenities, away from pollution.
Where is informal housing found in a city?
Informal housing is found in areas of locally unwanted land-use, usualy situated near landfills, sewage treatment plants and large polluting industries.
What affects the location of housing?
Land use planning, developers, land prices, and housing financial support.
