What is Housing
Structures or buildings made to shelter people from the elements.
Characteristics of housing
- It is a basic neccesity that everyone should have. 2. It is built in a planned or Unplanned manner. 3. The materials can come in many shapes and sizes. 4. Housing is either permanent or temporary
What is High rise?
When there is more than 6 storeys and there is a use of a lift
What is high density
When a given area accommodates many people.
Where is High-rise, high-density housing found
In the city centre
Where is low-rise, low-density
In the city fringes
Characteristics of high-rise and high density housing
Apartments and shared facilities (playgrounds, exercise equippment etc.)
Characteristics of low-rise and low-density housing
Comprises detatched houses, semi-detached, terraces and shophouses.
How are housing shortages caused
When the city and urban populations grow faster than the pace of housing development.
Characteristics of formal housing
- Built by the government or private developers. 2. The residents have legal rights to occupy the land. 3. Built with high-quality materials. 4. Residents have access to basic services
Characteristics of Informal housing
- Selft-built settlements. 2. No legal right to occupy land. 3. Lack of access to basic services. 4. Built with scavenged materials, repurposed zinc sheets and recycled lumber.
Risk of informal Housing
Risk of collapsing, being flooded on rainy days or catching on fire easily.
Where is formal housing found
Desirable land near greenary, ammenities. Away from pollution and supported with quality infrastructure.
Where is informal housing found
Locally unwanted land-use. Near sewage treatment plants and pollution. Neglected and lack infrastucture development.
What are land prices
Land prices the value of a piece of property including both the value of the land itself as well as any improvements that have been made to it.
