Chapter 10 Transportation Flashcards
What is a transport system
A system comprising of networks, infrastructures and modes
How does movement occur
It depends on the existence of transport network
What does a transport network comprise of
They contain nodes that are linked my routes
What is a node
A location that provides entry to the transport network
What us a route
It is a path for travel between nodes
What is network density
- It refers to the number of nodes and routes in an area
- The more nodes and routes in an area, the higher the network density
- A higher network density allows people to reach locations and engage in activities
What are indicators of quality transport infrastructure
Coverage, Capacity, Frequency, Convenience and Environmental sustainability
What is Coverage
- The availability and reach of infrastructure
- The distance or proximity the nearest transport node is to a Commuter
What is Capacity
- The number of people or amount of goods that can be moved
- How many passengers can be picked up at the station
What is Frequency
- The number of occurrences of a service
- How long does the next transport system take to arrive
- How often is maintenance carried out
What is Convenience
- Ease of movement
- How easy is it to transfer from one transport node to another
What its environmental sustainability
- The impact on the environment
- What is the impact of building the infrastructure
- How has the use of transport infrastructure affected the air quality
What is a terminal
- A facility where passengers and goods start or end their transportation process
What are interchanges
- Important points of transfer between or within transportation networks
- They ensure the continuity of traffic flow.
Where are Major transportation nodes found
Where there is high concentration of activities and high accessibility.
