Chapter 8 - First 2 pages Flashcards
List the functions of muscle tissue…
- Locomotion
- Breathing
- Postural support
- Heat production
- Venous return
What is muscle tissue?
Composed of several different tissues including muscle cells, nerve tissue, blood and types of connective tissue.
What percentage of body weight are skeletal muscles?
40-50%
What are the 3 layers of connective tissue within skeletal muscle?
a. Epimysium
b. perimysium
c. Endomysium
What is a fascicle?
The individual bundles of muscle fiber
What is epimysium?
The outer most layer that surrounds the entire muscle
What is the perimysium?
Connective tissue that surrounds individual bundles of muscle fibers
What is endomysium?
He connective tissue within the fascicles that surround each muscle fiber
What do the three layers of connective tissue form?
A tendon
What are the stuctures of skeletal muscle?
Sarcolemma, Satellite cells, Sarcoplasmic reticulum, Transverse tubules, myofibrils, myosin, actin, Troponin, Tropomyosin, Terminal cisternae, sarcomere
What is the sarcolemma?
Cell membrane surrounding the muscle fiber cell
What is the sarcoplasmic Reticulum?
A network of membranous channels that surrounds and run parallel to each myofibril
What are Transverse Tubules?
Membranous channels that extend from sarcolemma.
What are myofibrils?
Numerous thread-like structures that contain contractile cells.
What is myosin?
Thick filament that does NOT move
