Q

How does water influence mass movements?

A

Too little water on a slope will prevent the sediment from holding together increasing the potential for mass movement. Too much water can also make a slope unstable. Water can make the materials heavier and gravity will pull them down.

Q

What is solifluction?

A

The slow downhill movement of loose water logged materials that occurs in regions of permafrost. The material is mud like that is produced when water is released from melting permafrost.

Q

What are avalanches?

A

Landslides that occur in mountainous areas with thick accumulations of snow. Radiation from the sun can melt surface snow which then freezes at night into an icy crust. Snow that falls on top of this crust can build up, become heavy, slip off, and slide down a slop as an avalanche.

16
Q

Describe a barchan dune?

A

Solitary, crescent-shaped dunes.

17
Q

Describe transverse dunes.

A

Form in a series of long ridges that are perpendicular to the direction of the wind.

18
Q

Describe parabolic dunes.

A

U-shaped dunes that form between clumps of plants

19
Q

Describe longitudinal dunes.

A

Long dunes that are parallel to the wind direction. Form in areas of limited sand availability.

20
Q

What is an outwash plain?

A

The area at the leading edge of the glacier, where the meltwater streams flow and deposit outwash.

21
Q

What are drumlins?

A

Elongated landforms formed by glaciers taht have moved over older moraines.

22
Q

What are eskers?

A

Long, winding ridges of layered sediments that are deposited by streams flowing under a melting glacier.
