Chapter 8 Extra Questions Flashcards
What is a slide?
Moves as block of Earth material.
What is flow?
Movement involves mixing of particles within moving mass.
What is fall?
Free fall of Earth material.
How does water influence mass movements?
Too little water on a slope will prevent the sediment from holding together increasing the potential for mass movement. Too much water can also make a slope unstable. Water can make the materials heavier and gravity will pull them down.
What is solifluction?
The slow downhill movement of loose water logged materials that occurs in regions of permafrost. The material is mud like that is produced when water is released from melting permafrost.
What are slumps?
When the mass of material in a land slide rotates and slides along a curved surface a slump results.
What are avalanches?
Landslides that occur in mountainous areas with thick accumulations of snow. Radiation from the sun can melt surface snow which then freezes at night into an icy crust. Snow that falls on top of this crust can build up, become heavy, slip off, and slide down a slop as an avalanche.
What are ventifacts?
Rocks shaped by wind-blown sediments.
What is the most common component of dunes?
Quartz sand, though any dry, granular material can be formed into a dune.
What is the most common type of dune?
Barchan
Where do barchan dunes form?
In areas of constant wind direction.
Where do transverse dunes form?
In areas with strong winds and abundant sand.
Where do parabolic dunes form?
In areas with moderate winds and some vegetation. They are common on seacoasts.
What kind of dunes do parabolic dunes include that are extrememly curved?
Hairpin dunes
Where do longitudinal dunes form?
In areas with high, somewhat variable wind and little sand.
