7.2 Flashcards
1
Q
Deposition?
A
When the eroded materials are dropped off at another location. The final stage in the erosion process.
2
Q
Rill Erosion?
A
The erosion by running water in small channels on the side of a slope.
3
Q
Gully erosion
A
This is what happens when a channel becomes deep and wide. Gullies can be more than sm deep and can be a major problem in farming and grazing areas.
4
Q
What is gravity’s role in erosion?
A
- The force of gravity tends to pull al materials downslope
- Without gravity, glaciers would not move and streams would not flow
- Is also an agent of mass movements such as landslides, mudflows, and avalanches
5
Q
What is erosion by running water?
A
- water flowing down steep slopes also has greater potential to erode Earth’s materials because the steeper the slope, the faster the water flows
- water can carry more material over a greater distance
- water has more power to move large particles than wind
- stream erosion is greatest when a large volume of water is moving rapidly
6
Q
What is coastal deoposition and erosion?
A
- each year, streams and rivers carry billions of metric tons of sediments and weathered materials to coastal areas
- when wa river enters a large body of water, the water slows down and deposits sediment whic forms deltas
- the work of ocean currents, waves and tides carve out cliffs, arches, and other features along the continents edge
- erosion of materials also occurs along the ocean floor and at continental and island shorelines
- erosion occurs on islands where the constant movement of water wears away the shorelines
7
Q
What is glacial erosion?
A
- glacial movements scratch and grind some surgaces, polish others, scrape and gouge out large sections of the landscape
- landscape features from glacial movements include valleys with waterfalls, lakes, and variously shaped deposits of sediment
- erosion all affects of glaciers include deposition
8
Q
What is wind erosion?
A
- major erosion all agent in areas that experience limited precipitation and high temperatures as these places typically have little vegetative cover to hold soil in place so these particles can easily be moved by wind
- shore areas also experience wind erosion
- even though winds can blow against the force of gravity and easily move materials uphill, it is relatively insignificantt when compared to erosion by running water and glacial activity
9
Q
What is erosion by plants, animals, and humans?
A
- as animals and plants carry on their life processes, they move Earth’s surface materials from one area to another. Ex. Animals burrow into soil and shovel it to another place
- humans excavate areas and move soil from one area to another
- ex. Planting a garden, developing a new athletic field, building a highway
- effects of erosion by plants, animals, and humans are minimal compared to the erosion of water, wind, and glaciers.
