Energy
Ability to do work
Mechanical Energy
Two types of mechanical energy: Potential (a book sitting on a table) and Kinetic (a baseball flying through the air).
Thermal Energy
Heat is the internal energy in substances - the vibration and movement of atoms and molecules within substances.
Chemical Energy
This type of enery is stored in bonds between atoms in a molecule
Electrical Energy
This type of energy results from the movement of electrons.
Nuclear Energy
This type of energy is stored in the nuclei of atoms and is released by joining or splitting the atoms.
Electromagnetic Energy
This type of energy travels by waves.
The Three Major Fossil Fuels
Petroleum, Natural gas, and Coal
Law of Supply and Demand
The law of supply and demand is the theory that explains the interaction between the supply of the resource and the demand for that resources.
Low supply + high demand = Increase in price
Greater supply + lower demand = Decrease in price
Nonrenewable Resource
A resource of economic value that cannot be readily replaced by natural means on a level equal to its consumption.
Arguments used to defend the continued use of fossil fuels
- Abundant supply; low price for consumers.
- Technology already in place for extraction, processing, and delivery
- Politics: Fear of losing jobs over unemployed mine workers
- Some fuel has a high net-energy yield.
