Chapter 8- DNA, Genes And Protein Synthesis Flashcards
1
Q
What is a gene?
A
Section of DNA that codes for polypeptides and functional RNA
2
Q
What is a locus?
A
the particular position on a DNA molecule that a gene is located at
3
Q
Features of the genetic code
A
-Degenerate = most amino acids coded for by more than one triplet
-Always read in one direction
-Start of DNA sequence coding for polypeptide = start codon = codes for methionine
-3 triplets don’t code for an amino acid = stop codons - mark the end of polypeptide
-Non-overlapping = each bae in sequence only read once
-Universal
4
Q
What are introns and exons?
A
Exons = coding sequences, introns = non-coding sequences
