Chapter 8: Displays Flashcards
______ is a one-direction flow direction of information, _____ allows for interaction.
Display is a one direction flow direction of information, interface allows for interaction.
What is a static display?
Displays the same information consistently.
What is a dynamic display?
Displays different information over time.
Five Perceptual Display Principles:
- Make displays legible
- Avoid absolute judgement limits (Max 5-7 levels)
- Top-down processing (Highlight unexpected)
- Redundancy gain (Multiple cues or modes)
- Discriminability (Similarity creates confusion)
Two Mental Model Display Principles:
- Principle of pictoral realism (Configure to match system/mental model)
- Principle of the moving part (Match movement to system/mental model)
Four Attention Display Principles:
- Salience compatibility (Make information noticeable)
- Minimizing information access cost (Minimize “distance” between variables)
- Poximity compatibility principle (Link variables through common location, color, or other code)
- Principle of multiple resources (Distribute information between mental resources)
Four Memory Display Principles:
Kno
- Knowledge in the world (Display information rather than rely on memory)
- Support visual momentum (Grounding info when looking between data)
- Predicitive aiding (Show future states rather than force people to esimate)
- Consistency (Same cues should have same meaning)
Configural Display:
Arrange/integrate multiple instruments/information sources so they are viewed as a sinlge item/object.
Benefits of Configural Display:
- Exploits top-down processing and mental model
- Uses gestalt grouping principles
- Aid with predication
When everything is ok, there should be symmetry
Benefits of HUD:
- Reduced information access costs
- Conformal images (overlays) support divided attention tasks
- Collimated imagery
Costs of HUD:
- Clutter
- Hard to read imagery
- Hides events in the real world
Advantages of HMD:
- Minimize info access costs
- Can impose images over greater range of the far domain
