Chapter 8 : Data description and analysis Flashcards
Bar chart
A chart with bars where one of the two axes represents a categorical variable
Correlation
A tendency for the scores of one variable to be systematically related to the scores of another variable
Correlation coefficient
A coefficient ranging from 0 to 1 and taking positive or negative values to indicate the strength of the relationship between two variables
Descriptive statistics
Mathematical techniques for summarizing and organizing groups of numbers
Graph/Chart
A graphic representation of data
Histogram
A chart with bars where both axes represent continuous numerical variables
Inferential statistics
Techniques for drawing conclusions (making inferences) about a wider population from the data set
Run chart
A diagram composed of one or more jagged lines
Scatterplot or scattergram
A graph which shows the relationship between two variables by plotting corresponding values of each variable, one horizontally and the other vertically, with each point (individual) showing separately
Statistical significant
A result which is unlikely to have occurred by chance according to some pre-established criterion, usually a probability of less than .05
To plot a chart
To draw a chart from data set
