Chapter 8- Cells Flashcards
What is the animal cell made up of?
Cell (plasma) membrane Cytoplasm Nucleus Ribosome Mitochondrion
What is the animal cell made up of?
Cell wall Cell (plasma) membrane Mitochondrion Nucleus Nucleolus Vacuole Chloroplast Ribosome Cytoplasm
What is the cell membrane composed of?
Phospholipids
Proteins
Function of proteins?
Create gaps called pores
Pull chemicals through membrane
Take part in immune system
Cells can be identified by their surface proteins
What is the nucleus?
Control centre of cell
Contains DNA and proteins
What are chromosomes?
DNA and protein
What is the nucleolus?
Area of nucleus that stains darker
Makes chemicals: RNA
What is cytoplasm?
Between nucleus and cell membrane
Gel-like liquid containing water with salts and other organelles
Most metabolic activity happens here
What is the vacuole?
*Plant cell Has a membrane Filled with cell sap (Contains sugar and salt) Pushes other contents to edge of cell
What are chloroplasts?
*Plant cell
Contain chlorophyll
Photosynthesis takes place here
What are mitochondrion?
Double membranes
Function: aerobic respiration
Contain DNA and make copies of itself
What are ribosomes?
Float in cytosol
Produce protein
Name of cell that does not contain a nucleus?
Prokaryotic cell
Eg. Bacteria
Cell that contains a nucleus
Eukaryotic cells
