Spalling
The flaking of a concrete surface when exposed to prolonged extreme heat.
Concrete form
A temporary mold to support the shape of concrete while it sets and cures.
Hardwood
Wood that comes from deciduous, broadleaf trees such as maple and oak.
Softwood
Wood that comes from coniferous, evergreen trees such as pine and cedar.
Splicing, sistering, or scabbing
A repair technique in which new framing members are placed alongside damaged members to reinforce them.
Platform construction
A method of construction in which each story of a house is built on a separate platform, like boxes stacked one on top of another.
Balloon construction
A method of construction that uses long wall studs that extend from the ground floor on up to the second floor.
Framing carpentry
The work done by carpenters to erect the basic skeleton of a house.
Subflooring
The working platform or layer that goes over the floor joists, providing a base for the finish floor.
Wall framing
The framing that provides the support for ceilings, upper floor, and roof; also provides the base to which wall sheathing is connected.
Wall sheathing
The outside covering installed over the wall framing, usually made of plywood.
Trusses
Pre-assembled roof framing.
Drywall
A sheet of plaster material covered on both sides with a fiber paper bond; usually comes in four-foot widths and eight-or 12-foot lengths.
One square
100 ft.² of shingles.
Flashing
Tin, aluminum, copper, or other resistant material strip that is used to seal joints or other breaks on a roof surface such as chimneys, parapet walls, and skylights.
Standard double roll
72 ft.² of wallpaper.
Circuit breaker (fuse box)
An electrical service panel that distributes electricity into several branches and acts as a safety device if an overload occurs.
Ground fault circuit interrupter
A device that monitors the flow of current through a circuit; when it detects a leak (ground fault), it shuts the power off to the circuit.
Structured wiring (infrastructure wiring)
The wiring built into a building to accommodate audio video and data technology.
Sweating a pipe
Sealing two pipes by heating and soldering the point of connection between them.
Heat pump
A unit that can act as an air conditioner and can reverse itself and draw heat from the outdoors to heat the inside of the house.
Furnace puff-back
The sudden ignition of unconsumed fuel in the furnace, resulting in a heavy soot being spread throughout the building.
