A statute that makes insurance fraud a federal crime when it affects interstate commerce.
Federal mail fraud statute
A statute that prohibits the use of the U.S. Postal Service for the purpose of defrauding or obtaining money or property by means of a false or fraudulent pretenses, representations, or promise.
Racketeer influenced and corrupt organization (RICO) act
A statute that permits prosecution under federal law of two or more acts of racketeering activity, including arson, mail fraud, wire fraud, bank fraud, interstate transportation of stolen vehicles or property, and theft from interstate shipments.
Arson
The deliberate setting of fire to property for a fraudulent or malicious purpose.
Incendiary fire
An intentionally set fire.
Origin
The location of the fire’s ignition.
Cause
The mechanism or event that provided heat and fuel for a fire.
Alibi
An assertion that the party in question was elsewhere at the time the crime occurred.
Special investigative unit (SIU)
A division set up to investigate suspicious claims, premium fraud, or application fraud.
