What is discipline?
A method of correction used to address inappropriate behavior in order to change it.
Why is this different in poverty?
Punishment tends to be about penance and forgiveness and not necessarily about change
Structure and choice
The two anchors of any effective discipline program that delineates the expected behavior and the probable consequences for not choosing those behaviors.
Student behavior: Argue loudly with the teacher
Poverty is participatory and the culture has a distrust of authority. Many see the system as inherently dishonest and unfair.
Student behavior: Hands always on someone else
Poverty has a heavy reliance on nonverbal data and touch
Student behavior: Extremely disorganized
Lack of planning, scheduling, or prioritizing skills.
Student behavior: Disrespectful towards teacher
Have a lack of respect of authority and the system. May not know any adults worthy of respect.
The child voice
Defensive, victimized, emotional, whining, nonverbal
ex: I hate you and that you want me to leave
The parent voice
Authoritative, directive, judgmental, evaluative
ex: That’s stupid, immature, out of line. Do as I say.
The adult voice
Nonjudgmental, free of negative nonverbal’s, factual
ex: We agree to disagree or How can we solve this problem.
