What is CPS? What does it do?
Child Protective Services; social service from the state that collects and investigates child abuse reports
What factors cause child abuse?
no one factor, it is a systematic problem. Family violence often a symptom of problems within family systems
Types of child abuse?
- physical
- sexual
- emotional/psychological
- neglect
What are the signs of physical abuse?
- unexplained injuries
- fading bruises/marks after an absence from school
- appears frightened/protests going home
- shrinks at approach of adults
What are the signs of sexual abuse?
- difficulty sitting or walking
- won’t change for gym/participate in physical activities
- displays inappropriate/mature sexual knowledge/behavior
- not allowed contact with other children
- parent secretive/isolates family
What are the signs of emotional/psychological abuse?
- extremes in behavior (overly compliant-aggressive)
- extremes of adult-like or immature
- delay in emotional development/suicidal thoughts
- no secure attachment
What are the signs of neglect?
- frequently misses school
- steals classmates’ food/money
- does not get appropriate medical/dental/vision care
- takes care of self at home
- inappropriate clothing for weather/unclean
- parent seems indifferent to child’s needs
What is the role of the teacher in reporting child abuse?
- follow school’s internal administrative policies
- (state/federal) report suspected maltreatment directly to appropriate agency
What to have before calling CPS?
important documentation of child (name, date of birth, address, phone number); details of suspected abuse; if possible information about perpetrator
How to work with families in abusive situations?
- be aware and respectful of cultural differences
- understand the importance of outreach and community
- establish a helping alliance and partnership with family
- emphasize family strengths
- advocate for children in preventing abuse/neglect in your community
