Mens Rea
Latin term used by lawyers when they discuss state of mind
Strict liability
Crimes that don’t require a guilty state of mind, but act is criminal
Statutory rape
Having sex with an underage partner

The conditions that make an act unlawful
Principal
Person who commits a crime
Accomplice
Helps principal commit a crime
Accessory before the fact
Person who orders/helps principal commit a crime but isn’t present during the crime
Accessory after the fact
Person who knows about a committed crime and helps principal avoid/capture/escape
Crime of omission
When person fails to perform an act required by law
Inchoate crimes
Crimes committed before or in preparation for committing another crime
Solicitation
The act of requesting or strongly urging someone to do something
Attempt
An effort to commit a crime that goes beyond mere preparation but does not result in commission of a crime

An act that is open to view
